How Green Is An AGA Or Rayburn Cooker?

By: David Craythorn

There is a misconception that AGA cookers and Rayburn cookers are bad for the environment. The reason people believe in the insufficient 'green' credentials of these renowned cookers is most likely based on energy consumption. However, to get a true indication of environmental impact you have to examine the larger picture and that involves gathering the facts about how a cooker is manufactured, its life-span, fuel source options and usage, and general functionality.
What's an AGA or Rayburn made from?
Range cookers are quality solid constructions yet 70 % of every AGA and Rayburn is manufactured from recycled materials. Vehicle components, lampposts, old cookers, machine parts and drain covers all go into producing an AGA and when it's come to end of its life, that 70 per cent will be used once more to make another AGA or Rayburn cooker completing the loop. So, you'll never see one on a landfill site and that brings us to our next green credential?
How long does an AGA last?
One of the significant environmental issues these days is caused by consumerism and our 'throw away' society. The longevity of kitchen appliances is generally substandard and on average consumers will buy 3-4 ovens in their lifetime. With an AGA or Rayburn, you're only ever likely to purchase one. These legendary cookers are known for their sturdy construction and quality parts which means you're likely to use it for a lifetime and perhaps even pass it on to your next generation.
AGA fuel options
With the cost of fuel escalating and the effect different energy sources have on the environment uppermost in everyone's mind, it's important to have choices. The AGA cooker offers you choice with several fuel options such as LPG, natural gas, diesel, kerosene and electricity. And as biofuels become more readily obtainable, AGA have already built a cooker that's biofuel-ready.
AGA is also developing their cookers to work with the new micro-generation of electricity in addition to alternative energy from wind power, solar power and heat pumps. This will involve storing energy for later use which the AGA and Rayburn can already do due to the cast iron design acting as a 'heat battery'.
But doesn't an AGA cost a lot to run?
The AGA has advanced significantly since its original design back in 1929 and that includes greater control of energy management. The latest line of electric AGA cookers use the normal 13-amp connection and incorporate the innovative AGA Intelligent Management System (AIMS). This allows you to program and adjust the output of your cooker to suit your needs. As for general energy consumption, that brings us to our next solid credential?
The AGA replaces your other kitchen appliances
Take a look around your kitchen and you'll see a number of devices used to make food or provide heat. The AGA does all these things in one unit. With an AGA, there's no need to have a toaster or an electric kettle and you can dispense with a tumble drier as the AGA's background heat is perfect for getting laundry aired and dried.
Additionally you don't have to have a radiator or electric heater in your kitchen because the AGA creates ambient heat (which can also radiate out into surrounding rooms allowing you to turn the thermostat down). And if you purchase a Rayburn with the hot water and heating option, you can do away with a central heating boiler completely - imagine having all your cooking, heating and hot water needs in one unit.
So, there can be energy saving possibilities with an AGA or Rayburn cooker and you're also eliminating the need for appliances that cause extra manufacturing miles and will most likely need replacing every few years (remember what we said about the 'throw away' society).
Manufactured in Britain
So many of our kitchen appliances originate from overseas which creates huge carbon emissions as a result of shipping. AGA cookers are built in Britain meaning less fuels miles. The foundry in Shropshire where every AGA is built has already invested £7 million on reducing emissions.
Don't just take our word for it
Both the AGA and Rayburn cookers have come out top in the Ethical Consumer mAGAzine best buys section. Ethical Consumer base their analysis on ethical scores for 5 key areas: environment, people, animals, politics and product sustainability. AGA and Rayburn scored 12.5 on their rating scale while ovens made from well-known manufacturers such as Bosch and Neff scored 4.5.
